TITLEGone To Heaven
POSTED BYgwood4848
COMMENTSMy father-in-law, Burt Lewis, told me this story years ago: Burt was a bomb/nav with the 569th BS, and manning the B-17 nose gun enroute to their German target. He was firing at an attacking ME-109 when a bullet or shrapnel penetrated the nose and exploded a fire bottle hanging on the bulkhead right behind him. He said that with the shock of the noise, blast of air, and the exploding fire bottle he was quite disoriented to say the least...however, when the fire bottle blew whatever the white contents of the bottle was, it sprayed all over his goggles and filled the area with white mist/powder...all he could see was white--he was sure that he was in heaven, and thought to himself in those brief seconds..."so this is what heaven looks like".... Burt will be 92 10 March...he still gets around well, has poor hearing, his eye sight has been surgically improved, he's still a gentleman of gentlemen, but unfortunately the last few years have nearly erased his memory of his Air Force career...I'll miss hearing that story from him, but 5 years ago I brought the movie Memphis Belle to him and with my then 16 year old son, his grandson, he was able at that time to bring to life many memories of those horrible missions over Germany...maybe not such a bad thing for him to forget.

COMMENTSThe Devil's Aces -- with a crew from the 570th stationed at Framlingham UK -- went down on May 28th, 1944. Three members of the crew -- Wicker, Cosgrove and Buntin, became POW's. the rest of the crew was killed. Fast forward several years and a young woman who was born on that fatal day "adopted" one of the grave sites in the American Cemetery at Margarten the Netherlands. For many years she has devotedly put flowers on the site and tended it. Now she would like to put a "face" on the name. She has contacted many people over the years---so far to no avail. Does anyone know anything at all about ARNOLD McKEE and / or JAMES J LEWIS??? If so, please contact me at gammyrutledge@gmail.com Thank you!

COMMENTSMy dad was Lt. Joe Urban, Jr. He was a bombardier/sometimes navigator with the 390th BG, 568th sq. He flew on 30 missions with the 1st being Christmas Day 12/25/44-Morscheid Bridge, Germany & the last being 5/45 the "Chow Hound" runs - dropping food supplies to the starving Dutch. I have preserved two scrapbooks his family kept of him & just finished typing out nearly 100 letters - enjoyed this so much. So proud of dad & all the brave military of the 390th & the "Mighty Eighth"!

TITLEWelcome to 390th Generations
POSTED BYneil
COMMENTSHello, and welcome to 390th generations. As the son of a member of the 570th Bomb Squadron, I created this site to help others research information on their friends and family, and fellow 390th members. My Father, George Steiner, passed away in 2004. As a child, he used to tell us stories of their missions, and his crew members. Names like "Fred Denne" and "Spangler" were common to myself and my brothers, and we always had the favorite stories we liked to hear. My dad had two photos that were taken from his B-17 while in flight, and I have posted them on this site. I also posted his service pictures, and one of his crew members in Crew 53. My goal is to make this site a place where you can collect memories. I've tried to make it search and share friendly. My goal is to notify members of this site when information is posted that they are interested in. That way you only have to visit the site when new information is posted, and you don't have to spend hours searching poring through postings, searching for a specific name, or aircraft. If you have any comments or requests, please join, and post a message to this board. Thanks, Neil Steiner
